In order to learn more about the diversity and ecology of arboreal ants in the eastern US, I am collecting ants from trees in state parks, game lands, and cities in North Carolina. Arboreal ants are abundant and ecologically important in tropical ecosystems, but we know almost nothing about the ants that live in trees in our temperate forests! This research represents the first comprehensive survey of canopy ants across temperate habitats and ecoregions and will help us to better understand how these important insects fit into our forest ecosystems.
